How To Install And Activate A WordPress Theme

In this tutorial I will be showing you 3 methods of installing and activating a WordPress theme. These three methods has been proven to be helpful in all circumstances. It is easy and takes just a STEP to achieve. Now get on with this tutorial.

Method 1: Using WordPress built-in Theme uploader .

STEP 1

  • First of all you must have the admin rights to be able to login into the admin section of WordPress 
  • Navigate to the left side of the admin bar menu and click appearance.
  • Select themes from the option menu.

STEP 2

  • Navigate to the top left corner and click on the Add new button
  • A new window opens with a lot of free themes to choose from.
  • You can install any of them by clicking on it and then press the install button on the preview page.
  • Unless you have a custom theme you want to install then navigate to the top left corner and click on upload theme.
  • Then click on choose file.
  • Locate your custom theme zip file and select it then click open.      Note: Remember you can only import zip file format.
  • Now with your zip file selected press install button to Belgian the installation. 

STEP 3

  • After the installation is done move back to the page and locate the theme
  • Select the theme you just install by clicking on it.
  • A  new page opens with a large thumbnail and the description of the theme with two buttons 
  • Click on the live preview to view how the theme will appear on your site.
  • Now if you like what you see then you can now activate the theme by clicking on the activate and publish button at the top.
  • The last thing to do is to close the customizer and on the WordPress toolbar, click on the home icon with your site name and select visit site.

Some themes will return error during installation uisng the WordPress built-in uploader so you might want to try the next method if your theme is returning error with this first method.

Method 2: Using File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

STEP 1

  • You must have at least have one ftp application install and using filezilla for this tutorial.
  • Enter the domain name, ftp username and the password. (FTP login credentials are different from the WordPress admin login credentials, if you have it then ask your service provider for it).
  • Click on connections then sit back for the application to load the appropriate folders.

STEP 2

  • Locate the public_html folder from the list of folders and click to open.
  • Find wp-content => themes and click to open.
  • Open the folder that contains the theme on your system.
  • Unzip the the downloaded zip file.
  • Drag only the theme folder which contains the them file into the themes folder inside the ftp application 
  • If your theme comes with a child theme drag it into the ftp theme folder.
  • Always keep an on the bottom part of the application as the transfer is ongoing, some files might not be tranfered and you need to reschedule them and run it again. 

STEP 4

  • Now go back to your WordPress admin dashboard 
  • Go to application and select themes.
  • Find the theme click to open.
  • A  new page opens with a large thumbnail and the description of the theme with two buttons 
  • Click on the live preview to view how the theme will appear on your site.
  • Now if you like what you see then you can now activate the theme by clicking on the activate and publish button at the top.
  • The last thing to do is to close the customizer and on the WordPress toolbar, click on the home icon with your site name and select visit site.

Method 3: Uploading Using Control Panel (Cpanel)

STEP 1

  • Login to your cpanel at example.com/cpanel with you cpanel login credentials. Remember cpanel credentials are not the same as WordPress admin login credentials.  Ask your service provider for more information. 
  • Open the file manager locate inside the cpanel.
  • Locate public_html folder and click on it.
  • Find wp-content and click to open.
  • Open the themes folder.
  • Click on upload on the main menu bar
  • Click on the select file button.
  • Navigate to the location of you downloaded zip file on your system select it and click open.
  • Wait until the upload is complete.

STEP 2

  • On completion you see a green progress bar indicating success. 
  • Go back to the previous tab where you uploaded the zip file.
  • Click reload from the second menu bar for the page to refresh.
  • Right click on the zip file to extract it.
  • Now go back to your WordPress admin dashboard 
  • Go to application and select themes.
  • Find the theme click to open.
  • A  new page opens with a large thumbnail and the description of the theme with two buttons 
  • Click on the live preview to view how the theme will appear on your site.
  • Now if you like what you see then you can now activate the theme by clicking on the activate and publish button at the top.
  • The last thing to do is to close the customizer and on the WordPress toolbar, click on the home icon with your site name and select visit site.
